Uncertain. Possibilities include:
- From Akkadian 𒉘𒈨𒌍 (/maddattu, middattu/, “measure of capacity, container”).
- From ܕܢܐ (dannāʾ, “jar, urn”), from Akkadian 𒂁𒆗𒉡 (/dannu/, “storage vat mostly for storing beer and wine”).
