From the root ܫ-ܡ-ܥ (š-m-ʿ) related to hearing, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Semitic. Cognate with Akkadian 𒄑𒌇 (šemû), Arabic سَمِعَ (samiʿa), Hebrew שָׁמַע (šāmaʿ), and Ugaritic 𐎌𐎎𐎓 (šmʿ).
