Etymology
[edit]Probably inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hal(H)-nu-, undergoing Fortunatov's law from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hal(H)-nu-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (“to grind”). Possibly related to Prakrit *अट्ट (aṭṭa), whence Hindi आटा (āṭā, “flour”), and also cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλέω (aléō, “to grind, mill”) and Classical Persian آرْد (ārd, “flour”).[1]
