Named after Umar Soomro. Renaming of अमरकोट (amarkoṭ) to उमर (umar) +‎ -कोट (-koṭ).

      जब बादशाह हुमायूँ शेरशाह सूर से हारकर सिन्ध में गया तब उमरकोट के शासक को कहकर जगमाल जी ने उसे वहाँ शरण दिलाई थी। वहीं ई॰ १५४२ अक्टूबर १५ को उमरकोट में अकबर पैदा हुआ था ।
      jab bādśāh humāyū̃ śerśāh sūr se hārkar sindh mẽ gayā tab umarkoṭ ke śāsak ko kahkar jagmāl jī ne use vahā̃ śaraṇ dilāī thī. vahī̃ ī. 1542 akṭūbar 15 ko umarkoṭ mẽ akbar paidā huā thā .
      When Emperor Humayun, after being defeated by Sher Shah Suri, fled to Sindh, Jagmal Ji persuaded the ruler of Umerkot to grant him refuge there. It was there that Akbar was born in 1542 on 15 October.
