Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit उद्द (udda), from Sanskrit उद्र (udrá), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *udrós (“otter”). Doublet of उद्र (udra), a tatsama. Cognate with Russian вы́дра (výdra) and Old English otor (whence English otter).
