From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (kakkaḍa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa, crab), with the word structure and semantic domain suggested borrowing from a substrate language; compare Santali [script needed] (kaṭko̱m, crab).[1]
