Etymology[edit]
Possibly from or connected to Proto-Indo-European *h₂ger- (“to assemble, gather together”). If so, cognates include Ancient Greek ᾰ̓γών (agṓn) and ᾰ̓γορᾱ́ (agorā́), and Latin grex.
