Inherited from Sanskrit *क्षाणयति (kṣāṇayati), perhaps from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćšān-aya-ti, of unknown, possibly substrate, origin. Compare Proto-Iranian *šan- (shake), Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀡𑀡 (chāṇaṇa, sifting).[1][2]
