Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit *स्त्यैन्य (styainya), vriddhi derivative of स्त्यान (styāna, “coagulated”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stiHyaHnás, from Proto-Indo-European *stih₂-yeh₂nós (“stiffened”), from the root *steyh₂- (“to stiffen”).[1] Cognate with Bengali ছানা (chana).
