Etymology

    Inherited from Prakrit दंत (daṃta), from Sanskrit दन्त (danta). Doublet of दंत (dant) and दंदान (dandān). Cognate with Gujarati દાંત (dā̃t), Marathi दात (dāt), Punjabi ਦੰਦ / دند (dand), Bengali দাঁত (dãt), Assamese দাঁত (dãt). Distantly cognate with English tooth, French dent.
