Etymology

Inherited from Apabhramsa वण्णिया (vaṇṇiyā), from Prakrit वण्णिआ (vaṇṇiā), वन्निआ (vanniā, “model, sample, specimen”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-)[1] from Sanskrit वर्णिका (varṇikā),[2][3] from वर्ण (várṇa) +‎ -इका (-ikā).

By surface analysis, बान (bān, “quality, character; appearance; attire”) +‎ -गी (-gī) or बाना (bānā, “quality, property; appearance; covering; garment”) +‎ -गी (-gī).[4] Both bases of the surface analysis are also ultimately from Sanskrit वर्ण (várṇa).
