[edit]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • (Delhi) IPA(key): /biːd͡ʒ.nɑː/, [biːd͡ʒ.näː]
  • Hyphenation: बीज‧ना
  • Rhymes: -iːd͡ʒnɑː

Etymology 1

[edit]

Often derived from Sanskrit वीजन (vījana, fanning; fan) or व्यजन (vyajana, fan), but the retention of -j- indicates derivation from a Middle Indo-Aryan verb with vijj- (e.g., Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (vijjijjaï, is fanned), from Sanskrit वीज्यते (vījyate)) and possible adaptation to forms like वीजन (vījana). Compare Bengali বিউনি (biuni), from Sanskrit वीजन (vījana), and Eastern Hindi बेना (benā), from Sanskrit व्यजन (vyajana), both of which have lost the -j- sound.

Cognate with Gujarati વીજણો (vījṇo), Marathi विजणा (vij̈ṇā), Bengali বিজনি, বিজনী (bijoni).
