[edit]Contraction of भानजा (bhānjā), from Prakrit 𑀪𑀸𑀬𑀡𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚 (bhāyaṇijja) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit भागिनेय (bhāgineya), from भगिनी (bhaginī, “sister”), whence Hindi बहन (bahan).
