Etymology
[edit]Per Kuiper, borrowed from Munda. Turner rejects this, and suggests *रे (*re, “sand”) + -त्र (-tra), the root of which has also given Sanskrit रेणु (reṇú, “dust, particle”), रेवट (revaṭa, “dust, whirlwind”), Prakrit रेवलिआ (revaliā, “dust devil”), and Hindi रेव f (rev, “sand”), रेह (reh, “fuller's earth”), and is from Indo-Iranian, whence Classical Persian ریگ (rēg, “sand”), Baluchi ریک (rēk).
