From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰáwtā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwtā, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéwtōr (“pourer”), from *ǵʰew- (“to pour”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬀𐬭 (zaotar).
