From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰáwtā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáwtā, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéwtōr (pourer), from *ǵʰew- (to pour). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬀𐬭 (zaotar).
