Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀺𑀬𑀜𑁆𑀚𑀢𑀺 (*bhiyañjati), from Sanskrit अभ्यञ्जति (abhyañjati, to anoint, wetten), a compound of अभि (abhi, towards) + अञ्जति (añjati, from the root अञ्ज् (añj, to smear, anoint)).
