From Old Assamese মই (moi), from Sanskrit মযা (máyā), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *máyaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máyaH, the instrumental singular of *aȷ́ʰám (I), from Proto-Indo-European *éǵHom. Compare Kamta মুই (mui), Punjabi ਮੈਂ (maẽ), Nepali (ma), Sylheti ꠝꠥꠁ (mui), Rohingya mui, Marathi मी (), Hindustani मैं (ma͠i) / میں(ma͠i) all deriving from oblique forms of the first-person personal pronoun.
