From Sanskrit मधु (madhu), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mádʰu, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (“honey, wine”). Cognates include Gujarati મધ (madh), Ancient Greek μέθυ (méthu), Lithuanian medùs, Old Church Slavonic медъ (medŭ, “honey”), and Old English medu (English mead).
