Punjabi

[edit]
Punjabi verb set
ਮਰਨਾ (marnā)
ਮਰਾਉਣਾ (marāuṇā)
ਮਰਵਾਉਣਾ (marvāuṇā)

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀭𑀇 (maraï), from Sanskrit मर॑ति (márati).

    Verb

    [edit]

    ਮਰਨਾ (marnā) (intransitive)

    1. to die, to perish
    2. to wither, to decay (of plants)
    3. to die down, to subside (of wind)

    Usage notes

    [edit]

Using the plain perfective participles (ਮੋਇਆ (moiā), or ਮਰਿਆ (mariā)) may come off as strange or even inappropriate depending on context (e.g. talking about someone's death). A light verb construction with ਜਾਣਾ (jāṇā), ਮਰ ਗਿਆ (mar giā), is more common colloquially.
