Etymology

Named after Mahmud Shah I. A corruption of Classical Persian مَحْمُود آبَاد (mahmūd ābād), a compound of مَحْمُود (mahmūd) +‎ ـآبَاد (-ābād, “placename suffix”).[1] This corruption involves a lenition of /b/ to /ʋ/ in the placename suffix.
