Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *mām-kāy; equivalent to മാവ് (māvŭ, mango) +‎ -ഇൻ (-iṉ, genitive suffix) +‎ കായ (kāya, (unripe) fruit). Cognate with Kannada ಮಾವಿನ ಕಾಯಿ (māvina kāyi), Tamil மாங்காய் (māṅkāy) and Telugu మామిడికాయ (māmiḍikāya).
