Etymology

From Pali kāḷasindhu (literally “black river”), from kāḷa (“black; sable”) + sindhu (“river; stream; sea; etc”); equivalent to Thai กาฬ (gaan) +‎ สินธุ์ (sǐn); believed to be named after the river น้ำก่ำ (náam-gàm, literally “dark river”), now in the nearby Sakon Nakhon Province.
