From Proto-Tai *kɯɲᴬ (to eat). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩥ᩠ᨶ, Lao ກິນ (kin), ᦂᦲᧃ (k̇iin), Tai Dam ꪀꪲꪙ, Tai Nüa ᥐᥤᥢ (kin), Shan ၵိၼ် (kǐn), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜃𑜫 (kin), Saek กิ๋น. Compare also Proto-Austronesian *kaən (whence Tagalog kain, Malay makan).
