Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ŋuːᴬ⁴, from Proto-Tai *ŋwɯːᴬ (snake). Cognate with Isan งู, Lao ງູ (ngū), Northern Thai ᨦᩪ, Khün ᨦᩪ, ᦇᦴ (nguu), Tai Dam ꪉꪴ, Tai Dón ꪉꪴ, Shan ငူး (ngúu), Tai Nüa ᥒᥧᥰ (ngü), Ahom 𑜂𑜥 (ṅū), Zhuang ngwz, Nong Zhuang nguz, Tày ngù, Bouyei ngeaz, Saek งั๊ว.
