Etymology

Traditionally believed to be from จันท (“moon”) +‎ บุรี (bù-rii, “city”), literally “moon city”.

Argued by modern scholar Sujit Wongthes to be from จันทน (“sandalwood”) +‎ บุรี (bù-rii, “city”), literally “sandalwood city”, in which -น- is dropped.
