Etymology[edit]

From Pali janapada (state; country; territory, literally foothold of men), from jana (men; people; etc) + pada (foot, footprint, footstep; post, position; etc); or from Sanskrit जनपद (janapada, idem), from जन (jana, idem) + पद (pada, idem); equivalent to Thai ชน (chon) +‎ บท (bòt). Cognate with Khmer ជានបទ (chéanbât).
