Etymology

From Proto-Tai *tacᴰ (to cut). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lao ຕັດ (tat), ᦶᦎᧆ (ṫaed), Tai Dam ꪔꪰꪒ, Shan တတ်း (tát), Ahom 𑜄𑜄𑜫 (tat), Zhuang daet. Outside of Tai, note similarities with Japanese 断つ (tatsu, to sever).
