From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer dravya (“asset; possession; property; wealth; valuable; etc”); ultimately from Sanskrit द्रव्य (dravya, “object; substance; thing; etc”). Compare Modern Khmer ទ្រព្យ (trôpyô); Lao ຊັບ (sap).
The first sense was probably first used on 11 November 1923, when the first book of the Civil and Commercial Code of Thailand was promulgated.
