Learned borrowing from Sanskrit मनुष्य (manuṣya, human). Compare Pali manussa, whence Thai มนุสส์. Cognate with Burmese မနုဿ (ma.nu.ssa.), Indonesian manusia, Javanese manungsa, Khmer មនុស្ស (mɔnuh), Lao ມະນຸດ (ma nut), Malay manusia, Northern Thai ᨾᨶᩩᩇ᩠ᨿ᩺, Shan မၼုၵ်ႉသႃႉ (mǎ nṵ̂k sâ̰a).
