From Proto-Tai *mitᴰ (knife). Cognate with Lao ມີດ (mīt), ᦙᦲᧆ (miid), Tai Dam ꪣꪲꪒ, Shan မိတ်ႈ (mīt), Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜄𑜫 (mit), Zhuang mid, Zuojiang Zhuang mid; Compare Proto-Be *miːtᴰ².
