Etymology

Borrowed from Sanskrit स्थान (sthā́na, “abode; domain; position”); probably via Old Khmer sṭhāna, sṭhāṇa, sṭhāṇna, sthāna (“location; place; position”). Compare Modern Khmer ស្ថាន (sthaan), Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨳᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ສະຖານ (sa thān) and Thai สถานี (sà-tǎa-nii).
