From Proto-Southwestern Tai *soŋᴮ¹ (to send; to conduct). Compare Middle Chinese (MC suwngH). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩫ᩠᩵ᨦ, Khün ᩈᩫ᩠᩵ᨦ, Lao ສົ່ງ (song), ᦉᦳᧂᧈ (ṡung¹), Shan သူင်ႇ (sùung), Tai Nüa ᥔᥨᥒᥱ (sǒng), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜂𑜫 (suṅ).
