[edit]From Proto-Tai *C̥.waːjᴬ; cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᩅᩣ᩠ᨿ, Lao ຫວາຍ (huāi), Shan ဝၢႆ (wǎai), Ahom 𑜈𑜩 (bay). Compare Proto-Austronesian *quay (whence Amis 'oway, Paiwan quay, Tagalog uway, Eastern Cham ꨨꨥꨬ (havei)).
