From Pali añjali (salutation; reverence; etc), from Sanskrit अञ्जलि (añjali, idem); perhaps via Old Khmer ʼañjali, ʼañjuli (the pressing of palms together for expressing respect or reverence). Cognate with Modern Khmer អញ្ជលី (ʼɑɑñcɔɔlii), អញ្ជុលី (ʼɑɑñculii); Burmese အဉ္ဇလီ (anyja.li).
