From Proto-Tai *nawᴮ (rotten). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨶᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ, Lao ເນົ່າ (nao), ᦓᧁᧈ‎ (naw1), Shan ၼဝ်ႈ (nāw), Ahom 𑜃𑜧 (naw) or 𑜃𑜧𑜈𑜫 (naww), Zhuang naeuh, Saek เหน้า.
