Etymology
[edit]Compound of โคม (koom, “lantern”) + ลอย (lɔɔi, “to float”), literally “floating lantern”.
The adjective originated from Punch, an English newspaper in the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1868–1910), which often presented jocular stories from the West and featured a lantern picture on the front page.[1]
