From Old Khmer bra or Angkorian Old Khmer braḥ, braḥh, brah (literally distinguished; divine; excellent; holy; sacred; superior; etc); ultimately from Sanskrit वर (vara, best; excellent; foremost; holy; precious; top; valuable; etc). Cognate with Thai พระ (prá).
