Etymology

[edit]

According to MED, borrowed from Pali piyaṅga, though such a term is not listed in the Pali-English Dictionary. The Pali term appears to possibly stem from the Sanskrit root पी (, to fatten), with semantic shift "fat" > "yellow" > "yellow mineral"; for a semantic parallel from this root, compare perhaps Sanskrit पीत (pīta, yellow).
