Etymology[edit]

Disputed. Perhaps a Northwest Caucasian borrowing: compare Adyghe уанэ (wanɛ), Kabardian уанэ (wanɛ, saddle), Ubykh уанагәы (wanagʷə, the middle part of the saddle). Alternatively, from ჰუნჱ (hunē, horse) +‎ Middle Persian [script needed] (gyl- /⁠gīr-⁠/, to hold, restrain) (see Persian گرفتن (gereftan)).
