Georgian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly akin to წერა (c̣era) and ყინული (q̇inuli), breaking it down as წერ-ა-ყინ-ი (c̣er-a-q̇in-i), hence the definition. Compare წერაქვი (c̣erakvi, pickaxe/axe for rocks) with similar development.

Tsira Baramidze instead breaks it down as წერ-აყ-ინ-ი (c̣er-aq̇-in-i), citing M. Chuxua who reconstructs Proto-Kartvelian *c̣er-q̇-in, and connects the word to some North Caucasian languages.[1]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /t͡sʼeraqʼini/, [t͡sʼeɾaχʼini]
  • Hyphenation: წე‧რა‧ყი‧ნი

Noun[edit]

წერაყინი (c̣eraq̇ini) (plural წერაყინები)

  1. ice axe
