  1. Literally “place of the old Cherokee”. Term applied to the traditional Cherokee homelands the Eastern United States (as opposed to Oklahoma or Arkansas, where the Cherokee migrated or were removed to).
  2. (more narrowly) North Carolina (a state of the United States)
