From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀdɛːŋᴬ³ (red), from Proto-Tai *C̥.dwiːŋᴬ (red). Cognate with Thai แดง (dɛɛng), Lao ແດງ (dǣng), ᦶᦡᧂ (ḋaeng), Shan လႅင် (lěng), Tai Dam ꪵꪒꪉ, Tai Nüa ᥘᥦᥒ (laeng), Ahom 𑜓𑜢𑜂𑜫 (diṅ) or 𑜃𑜢𑜂𑜫 (niṅ), Tày đeng, Zhuang nding, Nong Zhuang ndiang, Nùng đéng, Saek รี๋ง. Compare Proto-Be *ziːŋᴬ¹ (red; crimson).
