Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hellenic *artʰmós, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂er- (to fit; to put together) +‎ -θμός (-thmós). Semantically merged with the etymologically older ἀρτύς (artús), which is from the same root but with a different suffix.
