Etymology

[edit]

Ordinal of ὀκτώ (oktṓ, eight). The term derives from earlier *ὄγδοϝος (*ógdowos), itself perhaps from earlier Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓwos, from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓw. The voicing is possibly due to analogy after ἕβδομος (hébdomos).[1]
