Diacritical mark

[edit]

◌̞

  1. (IPA) Indicates lowered articulation, e.g. a more open vowel, or an approximant rather than a fricative.
  2. (phonetics, rare, diacritic above) A transcription convention of John Peabody Harrington for mid pitch; this avoids the confusion of the IPA macron, which in many conventions indicates vowel length.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • (IPA): When the base letter descends past the baseline, the obsolete spacing diacritic ˕ or a diacritic above ◌᫛ may be used instead, as in y᫛ or ɣ᫛.
