Japanese[edit]

Alternative spelling
朝ぼらけ

Etymology[edit]

Compound of (asa, morning) +‎ ぼらけ (borake, of uncertain meaning).[1][2][3]

Speculating on the nature of the second element borake, there is a distant possibility that this might be from 開け (hora ake, literally cave + opening), in reference to the myth of the sun goddess Amaterasu shutting herself into a cave, and the reopening of that cave representing a dawn of sorts. See also Amaterasu#The_Heavenly_Rock_Cave.
