From  (なみ) (nami, average, ordinary) + 天道 (テントウ) (ムシ) (tentō-mushi, ladybird, ladybug). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

The use 瓢虫 for tentō-mushi is an example of jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese.
