A compound of prefix (sa) and an uncertain みだれ (midare): the initial /sa/ is a prefix meaning “early” and is cognate with that found in 五月 (さつき, satsuki, fifth lunar month) and 早乙女 (さおとめ, saotome, young girl), while /midare/ is likely 水垂れ (みだれ, midare, water fall).
However, the kanji used for the spelling literally mean “rain of the fifth month”, not referring to May but to the fifth month in the lunar calendar. See below. The kanji are jukujikun (熟字訓).
