    Orthographic borrowing from Chinese 化學 / 化学 (huàxué, literally change + study).[1]

    Apparently first cited anywhere in an 1855 text in Chinese, in the diary of noted intellectual Wang Tao.[1] First cited in Japanese in an 1860 translation of a Dutch text by (かわ)(もと)(こう)(みん) (Kawamoto Kōmin).[1]

    Superseded older term (せい)() (seimi).[1][2][3]

      Reanalysis of ()(がく) (kagaku) above, as a compound of () (bake, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb ()ける (bakeru, to transform)) + (がく) (-gaku, -logy, -graphy). Alternative reading sometimes used to differentiate ()(がく) (kagaku) from ()(がく) (kagaku, science), which it has become an exact homophone of.[1][2][3][4][6]

      First cited to a 1967 novel by (おお)(はら)(とみ)() (Ōhara Tomie).[1]
