Etymology[edit]

Coined by Kikunae Ikeda in c. 1908, replacing 味精 (misei).

Literally the "essence of taste".

味の素 (hiragana あじのもと, rōmaji Ajinomoto, historical hiragana あぢのもと)

  1. a Japanese company that mainly produces food seasonings and other additives
  2. the trademarked product name for monosodium glutamate held by Ajinomoto
